The Invisible Sound.
2021
A project proposal for Plan8t, Changsa City, China
Collaborator: Nong Hua Lim
Notes:
- How do we describe sounds?
- How do we imply the imitative-driven transformation of sounds in the environment into words?
- How can we better understand the cross-modal associations between the acoustic representations of words and sounds?
The invention of language has allowed communicative contents to be represented in an abstract form. Virtually, every human faculty engages with imitation and mimicry. In this linguistic context, highly experiential sound contents are transformed into conceptual combinations of texts/ symbols which once vocalized present us with another dimension of sound experience accompanied by symbiotic visual representations. In other words, there is a ‘translation’ in the perceive-express process in different languages.
Inspired by onomatopoeias, this project is proposed to explore, and experiment with the linguistic identity of sounds, and create a vocabulary bank for sounds via artistic practice and research.
We aim to further investigate the role of vocal imitation in word formation as our human vocal system is incapable of describing/ generating exact copies of given sounds due to our anatomical parameters and constraints.
This is a work in progress.
